The Adult Centre for Employment Readiness and Training (ACERT) has a 20 station computer room. The computer room is open to both adults and children. Children come to the lab to ‘play’ on the computers. This play is actually with educational software which introduces and re-enforces mathematical skills and vocabulary that the children are beginning to learn in school or need when they enter school. The children range in age from 4 to 12 years. For some young children, this computer access is the first chance that they have to get on a computer before they start school. When a child is successful at an aspect of a program or shows a previously unrevealed ability it is exciting to watch them gain confidence as they want to do more and learn more.
The adults participate in audiovisual tutorials in the lab. The computer skills class introduces people to the computer and guides them through elements of basic computing. Word processing, typing, and other office applications are offered. Often the computer skills class gives people the self-reliance and familiarity to further their education and find employment. Whether it is adults or children that are in the computer lab at ACERT, there are wonderful opportunities to learn and grow.
